Description

We’ll begin our journey early in the morning, departing Cusco for a scenic 40-minute drive to the charming town of Andahuaylillas. Here, we’ll explore its iconic church—often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” This stunning 17th-century structure is renowned for its intricate murals in the Cusco style, elaborate wood carvings, baroque altars adorned with gold leaf, and a rich collection of colonial paintings. Our next destination is the ancient site of Pikillacta, one of the few pre-Inca archaeological complexes in the region, built by the Wari civilization over a thousand years ago. As we explore its vast layout of streets, plazas, and adobe structures, you’ll get a sense of the early urban planning that predated the Inca Empire. Just a short walk away is Rumicolca, a mysterious stone structure believed to have served as a ceremonial gateway or control point marking the southern entrance to the Inca Empire. We’ll then continue to Tipón, an impressive example of Inca engineering and agricultural mastery. Marvel at its precisely cut stone terraces and still-functioning irrigation channels, which demonstrate the Incas’ deep understanding of hydraulics and farming. To cap off the experience, you’ll have the option to stop in a local town to sample cuy al horno—traditional roasted guinea pig, a beloved delicacy in the Andes—before we return to Cusco in the afternoon.

Important Information

  • While the South Valley is slightly lower in altitude than Cusco, it's still above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft). Stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals the night before, and consider acclimatizing in Cusco for a day or two prior. Tipón and Pikillacta require the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico Parcial or Integral). The weather can vary greatly—mornings may be chilly, afternoons sunny and warm, and sudden rain showers are possible. Dress in layers and bring a light rain jacket or poncho. Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or hiking sneakers. Bring bottled water and snacks, though you’ll also pass through towns where you can buy food. Restrooms are available at some stops, but not always at the archaeological sites. Carry some toilet paper or tissues and small change for restroom use. Bring Peruvian soles in small denominations for food, souvenirs, and tips.
