Description

Embark on a journey to uncover the origins of the Inca civilization with our Puma Orqo & Maukallaqta Day Trip from Cusco. Your adventure begins at 8 am with a convenient hotel pick-up. As you leave Cusco behind, you'll travel through the picturesque mountainous terrain of the Paruro province, passing charming villages like Yaurisque. Here, you'll witness the ancient Church of San Esteban, built with stones predating the Inca civilization. Your first stop is the archaeological complex of Puma Orqo. This sacred site is steeped in legend and history, documented by chroniclers such as Juan de Betanzos and Cristobal de Molina. You'll explore the Inca ruins and visit the Tamputoqo caves, whose Quechua name means 'place of the dawn or origin.' You'll discuss their possible connection to the legend of the Inca empire's beginnings. Next, you'll embark on a scenic 20 minutes walk along parallel the Yaurisque River towards Maukallaqta. This archaeological site boasts over 200 masonry buildings and is believed to have housed a magnificent oracle with walls once covered in gold. You'll explore ceremonial fountains, alcoves, and other sacred structures that highlight Maukallaqta's historic and religious significance, which was tragically destroyed by Spanish conquistadors. After immersing yourself in the rich history of these sites, you'll take a break for lunch at your leisure. Your journey concludes as we return to Cusco, arriving around 4 pm. You'll be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable day steeped in Inca heritage.
