We stayed at Gocta Lodge in June at the very beginning of a 3-week Peru adventure - what a wonderful, almost untouched place to start - such a peaceful location, stunning views of Gocta Falls, a visit to the pre-Inca Kuelap, also attributing to a gradual altitude acclimatisation. The Lodge's staff are friendly, accommodating and attentive - rooms are clean and well appointed with postcard-quality views - food is fresh and tasty with a broad variety (should one stay a few days) and good vegetarian options. The tours/visits/day hikes to Gocta Falls, Kuelap and Chachapoyas were well organised, punctual, flexible and our guide Jhon was simply second-to-none - in tune with the environment, a budding ornithologist, proud of his surroundings, village, Peru and the Peruvian people - what a start - fantastic.
There was ongoing construction every day of our stay. If I had been made aware of this in advance, I would have chosen alternative dates. The jacuzzi was only hot the first two days of our stay, and then it was freezing cold and unusable. No drinking water fountains are available, only bottled water priced at S5 per bottle which seems a shame given its eco friendly aims. However, the tours organised through the front desk were amazing and the location is incredible with beautiful views. Just don’t expect a luxurious stay. I’m sure it will be amazing again once all the construction is completed, and they turn the heater back on in the jacuzzi
