Description

Day 1: Arrival and First Threads of Connection Begin your journey with a departure from Cusco towards Chinchero, crossing high Andean landscapes where terraces climb like stairways to the sky. Receive a warm welcome from your host family and community members, and get introduced to the cooperative and your home for the next two nights. Enjoy a traditional lunch prepared with local, seasonal ingredients. Get oriented to community life, customs, and values. In the afternoon, have your first encounter with the textile universe. Learn about Andean weaving traditions and symbolism, watch a demonstration by master weavers, and participate in a hands-on session, including the preparation of wool and an introduction to spinning using the puska (Andean spindle). In the evening, participate in daily activities (depending on the season), such as herding alpacas, tending crops, or simple household tasks. Have dinner with your host family and enjoy a quiet evening under the Andean sky. Day 2: The Language of Color and Pattern Wake up to the crisp mountain air and join optional community activities such as feeding animals or agricultural work. After breakfast, dive into the science and artistry of ancestral dyeing techniques. Prepare thread and degrease it using natural alkaline substances. Learn about the mordentado process using natural minerals (alum, potassium sulfates) and dye with native plants, seeds, flowers, roots, and cochineal. After lunch, participate in a weaving techniques workshop. Receive progressively guided training adapted to your level. Learn about thread twisting (k’antiy), loom setup and tool handling (khallwa, wich’una), weaving structures (simple panels, linear patterns), and the pallay (pick-up technique) for symbolic designs. In the evening, continue informal interaction with the community. Have dinner and enjoy a storytelling space (with interpretation). Reflect on Andean values: reciprocity (ayni), coexistence with nature, and collective living. Day 3: Weaving Your Story and Farewell In the morning, participate in a final weaving session. Continue your textile piece (ribbon, chuspa, or small panel) with personalized guidance from master weavers. At midday, join a closing circle with the community to share experiences and cultural exchange. After lunch, return to Cusco.
