Description
Come to the Sacred Valley hungry — not only for food, but for conversation, stories, and a glimpse into everyday Andean life. Your Pachamanca experience begins in Urubamba, in the heart of Peru’s Sacred Valley, where you’ll be welcomed into a relaxed local setting and meet the people who will share this traditional meal with you. Pachamanca is one of the oldest traditions of Peruvian gastronomy. Its name comes from Quechua: pacha means earth and manka means pot. Instead of cooking in a conventional kitchen, meats, potatoes, native Andean tubers, vegetables and aromatic herbs are cooked underground using stones heated over a fire. You won’t simply sit down and wait for lunch. You’ll see how the hot stones are prepared, discover the ingredients and herbs used in the Andes, and take part in building the Pachamanca before it is covered and left to cook beneath the earth. During the experience, you will also spend time with Brígida, a local Andean artisan, who will introduce you to traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations. You’ll have the chance to try the process yourself, learn about the meaning behind the textiles, colors and patterns, and discover how weaving remains an important part of everyday life and cultural identity in the Andes. And then comes one of our favorite parts: waiting. There is no restaurant rush here. This is the time to sit together, talk, ask questions, exchange stories and learn about life in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Food becomes the excuse for something much more interesting — meeting people. When the earth oven is finally opened, the aromas tell you lunch is ready. The Pachamanca is uncovered and served straight from the earth, and everyone gathers around the table to share the meal together. This is not a formal cooking class or a staged cultural show. It is a slow, social and delicious introduction to traditional Andean food, local culture and Peruvian hospitality. Come hungry. Leave knowing a little more about Peru — and perhaps a few more people than when you arrived.Includes
