laya Makaha sits right in the heart of Miraflores, one of Lima’s most iconic neighborhoods — and it’s where Kamea Surf has been putting first-timers on waves for years.
This isn’t a large surf school operation. Kamea runs small groups on purpose, so your instructor is actually beside you in the water — not shouting from the shore while managing ten other people. Before you paddle out, you’ll spend time on the beach going through wave reading, paddling mechanics, ocean safety, and the pop-up technique that gives beginners the best shot at standing up on their first day.
Then you’re in. Your instructor stays close — helping you position for waves, giving real-time feedback, and making sure you’re building actual technique rather than just surviving each ride. Most people stand up and ride during their first session. When that happens, you’ll understand why Peruvians have been obsessed with this stretch of coastline for decades.
Between waves, you’ll pick up on things most surf lessons skip entirely — how local surfers read the Pacific swell, the role surfing plays in Lima’s coastal identity, and why Makaha draws both beginners and regulars year after year.
