Description

Begin your afternoon with pickup from your accommodation in Puerto Maldonado at approximately 1:00 PM. Travel by car or van to the river, then board a motorized boat for an approximately 40-minute journey toward Lake Sandoval, inside Tambopata National Reserve.

From the reserve entrance, follow a mostly flat 3-kilometer rainforest trail and wooden boardwalk toward the lake. As you walk through the forest, your naturalist guide will help you observe and interpret the wildlife encountered along the way. Red howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and saddle-back tamarins are among the primates that inhabit this forest.

Reach Lake Sandoval in the afternoon, as the intense midday heat begins to soften. Board a paddle canoe and explore the lake quietly from approximately 3:30 PM until sunset. With no motor running on the lake, enjoy the calm atmosphere, reflections, and sounds of the surrounding rainforest and aguaje palm swamp.

Watch the lakeside vegetation for hoatzins and scan the palms for blue-and-yellow and red-bellied macaws. The wetlands also support sunbitterns, green ibises, anhingas, cormorants, Cocoi herons, striated herons, and other Amazonian birdlife.

Giant river otters inhabit Lake Sandoval, while black caimans can be found in its waters and along the vegetated margins. Your guide follows the natural activity encountered that afternoon rather than focusing on a single species. Binoculars and a spotting scope are provided to help with wildlife observation.

As daylight fades, remain on the lake to experience sunset from the paddle canoe. Watch the colors and reflections change across the water and palm forest while the sounds of the rainforest gradually shift from day toward night.

The experience continues after sunset. Leave the lake and walk the 3-kilometer forest trail back after dark using flashlights. Listen to the nighttime forest and stop when wildlife is encountered along the way.

At the river, board the motorized boat for the nighttime journey back toward Puerto Maldonado, followed by transportation to your accommodation. Return is expected at approximately 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Limited to a maximum of 8 participants, this experience is designed around the natural transition of Lake Sandoval from afternoon through sunset and into the night. Wildlife is observed in its natural habitat, so individual sightings cannot be guaranteed.
