Bed and Breakfast Hostels

Inkaterra hacienda urubamba

A hotel could be located in a much less beautiful place than the Sacred Valley of the Incas, on the route from Cusco to Machu Picchu. And given the spectacular location, a hotel could be acceptable even with much less than what the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba offers. But as Peruvian tourism continues to boom, especially among well-off travelers, the demand for hostels like Inkaterra seems to be insatiable (don't be surprised if your appetite is still voracious when you leave).

The hostel, with its 24 separate houses, is located on one hundred acres of land on a hillside overlooking the valley and the green slopes of the mountains in the background. It is no longer necessary to mention that hotels like Inkaterra are as sustainable as possible: they grow their vegetables with zero carbon methods, using oxen and hand tools instead of industrial agricultural techniques.

It also goes without saying that extreme sustainability can coexist comfortably with luxury first. The rooms are unpretentiously designed, paying tribute to local decoration and crafts, and the amenities are discreet but excellent, including heated floors, down comforters, and modern electronic equipment. Also, some luxuries transcend time: the view of the Andes from their private terrace, for example.

The restaurant, with an “earth to the table” concept, puts you in touch with the land as few culinary experiences can, and as would be expected, the hotel bar serves a pisco sour more than competent. But the most you will remember about Hacienda Urubamba may be the surroundings. From this starting point, the tours give away the dramatic views of the Inca Trail, without the crowds.
