See the famous sarcophagi of Carajía, and explore the Quiocta Caves to see stalactites, stalagmites, and pre-Inca remains. Be picked up from your hotel in Chachapoyas and head northeast to Lamud. Pass through the towns of Cochechan and Cruz Pata. From Cruz Pata, take a 30-minute walk to the funerary site of Carajía. See the famous sarcophagi of Carajía, pre-Inca anthropomorphic sculptures over 2 meters tall that rest on the cracks of the limestone cliff. These individual funerary capsules contain mummified remains of people from the 15th century. Their location on a cliff has kept the sarcophagi safe from the weather of the area. Stop for a delicious lunch in Lamud before continuing to the Quiocta Caves. Explore the natural tunnels to see the impressive stalactites and stalagmites formed by the effect of underground waters over thousands of years. As you explore the caves, see pre-Inca burial remains and rock paintings of the Chachapoyas culture.
