Description
Discover the ancient Inca agricultural of the concentric circular terraces of Moray, and the salt ponds of Salineras de Maras on a full-day tour from Cusco. See how the Incas used these sites to experiment with different crops and adapt plants to various microclimates.
Start your day with a pick-up from Plaza Regocijo in Cusco at 9:00 AM In Chinchero, enjoy a demonstration of traditional dyeing and alpaca wool weaving techniques carried out by local artisans who use natural dyes from plants and insects.
Continue to Moray, a unique archaeological site consisting of concentric circular terraces that the Incas used as an agricultural laboratory. Each level of the terraces presents a variation in temperature, allowing the Incas to experiment with different crops and adapt plants to various microclimates. This innovative use of space was crucial for the agricultural diversity of the Inca Empire.
Proceed to the Salineras de Maras, a complex of more than 3,000 salt ponds dating back to the Inca period that are still used for artisanal salt extraction. Observe how salty water from an underground stream is channeled into the ponds, where it evaporates, leaving behind salt crystals. The salt from Maras is highly valued for its quality and purity.
