Description
Begin your adventure with a pickup from your hotel or a central meeting point in Cusco. After a quick safety briefing, start your scenic journey south toward the province of Canchis. Enjoy a beautiful early morning drive through small Andean towns such as Urcos and Sicuani, with stunning views of valleys and snow-capped peaks.
Make a short stop in Sicuani for breakfast, restrooms, and acclimatization before continuing to Phinaya (4,700 m / 15,420 ft), a small highland village considered the gateway to Quelccaya Glacier. Upon arrival in Phinaya, take time to adjust to the altitude, stretch, and get ready for the hike. Your guide will explain the local ecosystem, the environmental importance of the glacier, and safety guidelines for the hike.
Start your 3-hour trek toward the majestic Quelccaya Glacier. The trail winds through high Andean terrain, surrounded by colorful mountains, clear lagoons, and endless sky. Enjoy plenty of stops for photography and interpretive talks about the glacial landscapes and climate change. No horses or pack animals are used — this is a low-impact, eco-friendly experience.
Arrive at the base of Quelccaya Glacier, a vast field of ice and snow that stretches as far as the eye can see. Take time to explore the edges of the glacier safely, capture incredible photos, and enjoy a boxed picnic lunch with panoramic views of the ice cap. Your guide will share insights about the glacier’s history and the ongoing environmental changes affecting this unique ecosystem.
Begin your descent back to Phinaya following the same scenic route. The lighting conditions on the return journey often create amazing opportunities for late-afternoon photography. Relax in the peaceful mountain village of Phinaya with a hot chocolate or coca tea prepared by local residents. This is a great chance to rest and appreciate Andean hospitality before returning to Cusco.
