Description
Begin your adventure with pickup from a central meeting point in Cusco. After a brief safety talk, set off on a scenic journey south to the province of Canchis. Enjoy a beautiful morning drive through small Andean villages like Urcos and Sicuani, with stunning views of valleys and snow-capped peaks.
Make a short stop in Sicuani for breakfast, a bathroom break, and to acclimate before continuing to Phinaya (4700 m / 15,420 ft), a small highland village considered the gateway to the Quelccaya Glacier. Upon arrival in Phinaya, take your time to adjust to the altitude, stretch, and prepare for the hike. Your guide will explain the local ecosystem, the environmental significance of the glacier, and safety guidelines for the hike.
Begin your 3-hour hike to the majestic Quelccaya Glacier. The trail winds through high Andean terrain, surrounded by colorful mountains, crystal-clear lagoons, and endless skies. Enjoy numerous stops for photos and interpretive talks about glacial landscapes and climate change. No horses or pack animals are used; this is an eco-friendly, low-impact experience.
Reach the base of the Quelccaya Glacier, a vast field of ice and snow stretching as far as the eye can see. Take your time to safely explore the glacier's edges, capture incredible photos, and enjoy a picnic lunch with panoramic views of the ice cap. Your guide will share insights about the glacier's history and the environmental changes affecting this unique ecosystem.
Begin the descent back to Phinaya along the same scenic route. The lighting conditions on the return journey often offer incredible late-afternoon photo opportunities. Relax in the tranquil mountain village of Phinaya with a hot chocolate or coca tea prepared by locals. This is a great opportunity to rest and appreciate Andean hospitality before returning to Cusco.
Finally, head to the Plaza de Armas and walk to the renowned bar 'República del Pisco' for a class on how to prepare the traditional Pisco Sour, a traditional Peruvian drink.
