Description
Enjoy an authentic experience with real families from the Floating Islands of the Uros, direct descendants of the ancient inhabitants of Lake Titicaca. This tour will let you get to know their way of life, their customs, and their ancestral language up close, on a journey full of history and cultural connection.
The adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel and a boat ride to the Uros Islands. During the trip, the guide shares information about the lake, its species, its legends, and the meaning of the name Titicaca, setting the mood to discover one of the most iconic places in the Peruvian highlands.
When you arrive at the first island, you'll be greeted with a greeting in the Aymara language by the president or local representative. Here you'll learn how the islands are built through a real totora model, where the locals explain—each detail of the process in their native language; the guide translates into Spanish and English so that everyone understands.
Then, the families invite visitors into their homes to share a moment with them and dress in the typical Uros costume to take pictures and enjoy a unique cultural experience.
Afterwards, there's a time for local crafts and souvenirs, where visitors can directly support families by buying handmade products.
At the end of the visit, you can take a ride on a totora catamaran, a traditional boat made entirely from the plant that gives life to the islands. This ride is optional and takes you to the second island, but if you prefer, you can continue on the main boat.
The second island has a different vibe, with cafes, shops, and local restaurants where you can enjoy a fresh trout ceviche or fried trout, typical dishes of the lake. Here you can see the contrast between traditional family life and the more touristy part of the community.
If you want, you can continue to a third island, known as the Totora Museum (not included in the package cost). This place was created by two grandfathers of the community, who made bird sculptures and a replica of the first Uros raft, a symbol of the history of this floating village.
Finally, you'll head back to the main port by boat, and from there, you can return to your hotel or downtown Puno.
