Description
1. Urubamba Local Market – The Flavors of the Valley
We begin the day with hotel pick-up, either from Cusco or the Sacred Valley at 8 am and head to the picturesque Urubamba market. Here, you will discover the incredible diversity of Andean products: from exotic fruits and colorful tubers to traditional herbs and native grains.
Main experience: Tasting local products (fruit juice, rocoto relleno, papa rellena, tamales etc.) while learning about the daily life of families who supply the market.
Added value: An authentic insight into everyday life in a Sacred Valley town out of the turist crowds.
2. Stop at a Traditional Chichería – The Taste of the Incas
On the way to Ollantaytambo, we’ll make a special stop at a chichería, a traditional place where chicha de jora is prepared. This fermented drink made from germinated corn was consumed by the Incas and is still enjoyed today.
Main experience: Learn about the process of making chicha, from germinating the corn to fermenting it in clay jars, and taste this unique beverage.
Added value: A living tradition that connects directly to the region’s history and customs.
3. Ollantaytambo – The Living Inca Town
We then arrive at the charming town of Ollantaytambo, known as the “living Inca town” because it still preserves its original urban layout.
Main experience: Walking through its narrow cobblestone streets, stone walls, and water canals, exploring its architectural legacy.
Highlight activity: Entering a traditional home to see how families were organized in Inca times and to learn about the valuable objects they kept.
Added value: An immersion into the past that is still alive today.
4. Patacancha Community – Ancestral Traditions
Our final stop is the high-Andean community of Patacancha, where we will be welcomed by a local family.
Main experience: Participating in the preparation of a Pachamanka, an ancestral underground cooking method that combines meats, tubers, and local herbs.
Cultural activity: Learning traditional weaving techniques and creating a bracelet using the ancient Andean loom.
Lunch: Sharing the freshly prepared Pachamanka in the family’s home, enjoying an authentic and warm atmosphere.
Added value: A close encounter that allows you to understand the Andean worldview, their clothing, and their lifestyle.
After all this amazing experience we will drive back to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Also we can drop you off at Ollantaytambo train station if it is required.
