The department of Madre de Dios is located in the southeast of the country. In the north it borders Ucayali, in the south and in the west with Punoy in the east with Brazil and Bolivia. Its territory covers areas of high jungle and jungle. Its capital is Puerto Maldonado, in the province of Tambopata.
 
Its climate is tropical warm and humid with an average temperature of 17 ° C to 20 ° C in the months of June and July and a maximum of up to 36 ° C in the months of December to March.

The south of Madre de Dios is dominated by the buttresses of the Carabaya Range. To the west, in the area where the springs of the Manu River are, there are hills of low elevation, among which is the Fitzcarrald Isthmus, which form the watershed between the Madre de Dios and Urubamba rivers.

Currently two of the main economic activities of the department are ecotourism and chestnut extraction.
