It is located 22 km (14 miles) north of Caraz City, in the Áncash region. The canyon is an impressive geological formation in the northern mountains of Peru, between the Cordillera Negra (Black Range) and the Cordillera Blanca (White Range).

A perfect place for rock climbing 

The waterfall has been approved as a source of energy through the hydroelectric station of Cañón del Pato, in Huallanca, a facility that provides electricity to the departments of Cajamarca, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Áncash.
 
The canyon can be reached via Molinopampa - Huallanca and its 35 tunnels. Mountain biking is frequently practiced in the area.
