Indian Restaurants in Peru

Indian cuisine in Peru might surprise you. You won’t find hundreds of spots, but the handful of Indian restaurants, mostly in Lima’s Miraflores and San Isidro neighborhoods, serve dishes that are genuinely satisfying. Don’t expect a full-on spice carnival like back in India, though. The flavors tend to be milder, maybe a nod to local tastes, but the chefs do a pretty good job balancing authenticity with what Peruvians enjoy.

My favorite place to grab a butter chicken or a dosai is the cozy place called Gandhi, tucked away near Avenida La Mar. It’s got the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel like you stumbled onto a quiet spot off the beaten track. Also, if you happen to visit around Peruvian winter (June to August), a warm bowl of dal and some garlic naan hits differently after a chilly day out.

Here’s a tip: some spots don’t advertise their lunch specials loudly, but if you ask, you might score a great deal with a thali platter that offers a bit of everything. And take advantage of lime soda or masala chai if you want something different from your usual drink, trust me, it’s worth trying.

What I wish I knew before ordering

If you’re craving Indian food in Peru, aim for lunch around 1-2 pm. A lot of places have hidden weekday specials not advertised online. Also, ordering a thali, basically a platter with several small dishes,is a smart way to sample different flavors and avoid getting overwhelmed later. I like Gandhi near Parque Kennedy for this. Oh, and don’t expect the mega-spicy dishes; it’s a gentler introduction to Indian spices, tuned for local palates. If you want heat, just ask. They’ll usually be happy to turn it up a notch.

One more tip: during Lima’s cool and foggy winters, nothing beats a cup of masala chai inside with a warm samosa. It feels like comfort food, but in a city where such spice is a novelty.
