Real talk on Peruvian seafood

If you want the real deal, skip the touristy restaurants and find where locals eat. One of my favorite spots is 'El Mercado' in Miraflores,it’s lively, no-frills, and the ceviche there hits the balance between tart and fresh every time.

Also, don’t overlook the power of seasonality. Certain fish like cabrilla and chita show up only part of the year, so if you’re lucky enough to spot them, try them. Ask your waiter or the fishmonger,it really makes a difference in flavor and texture. Oh, and pair your seafood meal with a cold Inca Kola if you want to feel truly local!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about seafood in Peru? Here are some quick answers from a local.

Hit up Mercado Surquillo or La Mar in Miraflores early in the morning. Locals shop there before the crowds, so you know the fish is fresh. Don’t be shy,ask the vendors what’s just come in.
Absolutely. Peruans eat ceviche year-round, but the fish changes with the seasons. Summer brings milder fish, but anytime is good to try it. Just make sure it’s fresh, you’ll notice the bright smell and firm texture.
It depends, but usually not overwhelmingly so. Most ceviches and dishes have a mild heat from ají amarillo or rocoto. If you want more spice, just ask for extra chili, but Peruvian seafood focuses more on fresh flavors than burn-your-mouth heat.
Definitely. Head north to Trujillo or Máncora for amazing coastal seafood, often cheaper and more rustic than in Lima. I specially recommend the jaleas up north, crispy fried calamari, fish, and shrimp, often served with sweet potato and salsa criolla.
If you stick to popular spots and vendors who turn over their seafood daily, you should be fine. Ceviche is usually prepared fresh minutes before serving, so that helps. Trust your senses,if something smells 'fishy' (not in a good way), skip it.
