Description
The 4-day Inca Trail tour starts with pick up from your accommodation in Cuzco at around 4 am. The guide and the porter leader will take you and the rest of the group by minibus to Ollantaytambo, where you will have breakfast and meet the porters (the real heroes of this adventure). You will continue in the minibus a few more kilometers until you reach the beginning of the Inca Trail: Piscacucho (also known as Km 82). At this point, at an altitude of 2,700 meters, is where the adventure really begins. Day 1: Llactapata - Ayapata Camp You will start walking a flat stretch along the valley of the Vilcanota River. You will pass through the last village along the route and enter the road. After two hours, you will reach the viewpoint of the Inca site Llactapata. You will continue walking for 2 hours, stopping for lunch, and then face the slope to the Ayapata camp at 3,300 meters altitude. Day 2: Ayapata Camp - Abra Warmiwañusca (dead woman's pass) This is the longest and most demanding day of the Inca Trail. In the first 4 hours, you will cover less than 4 km with lots of stairs to climb almost 1,000 meters to the Dead Woman's Pass. You will descend to the Pacaymayu valley for lunch and then climb 2 hours to the Runkurakay pass. Finally, you will arrive at Chaquicocha camp at 3,600 meters altitude. Day 3: Chaquiccocha - Phuyupatamarca A less demanding day than the previous one. You will ascend gently to the Phuyupatamarca peak at 3,600 meters altitude. Then, you will descend through the cloud forest to Wiñaywayna. Day 4: Sun Gate - Machu Picchu You will walk before dawn to the checkpoint to access the trail to the Sun Gate. After passing the checkpoint, you will arrive at the Sun Gate to see Machu Picchu. You will then descend to the citadel itself for a two-hour guided tour. After the visit, you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch and then the panoramic train back to Ollantaytambo and Cuzco. This summary omits some details but captures the essence of the Inca Trail experience.Includes
